Fuel Cell Systems in Future Energy Supply

Prof. Angelika Heinzel
Universität Duisburg-Essen

Abstract

Fuel cells as efficient energy conversion devices will play a role in different applications. Stationary combined heat and power supply (CHP), electro mobility and remote and portable energy supply systems are currently under development.

Residential applications as well as larger CHP are already installed in wide spread field trials, lifetime issues and cost reduction are the main R&D topics. Fuel cell vehicles also are tested with respect to their road capability and market introduction will start in 2015 in Korea and Japan. Portable and remote applications for fuel cells are mainly military, leisure, telecommunication (police radio).

An overview over the available techniques, some R&D highlights of our work at ZBT and the international state of the development will be given.

Biographical Information
Angelika Heinzel is currently professor at the chair for energy technology at the university Duisburg-Essen since 2001 and CEO of the ZBT GmbH (Zentrum für Brennstoffzellen Technik). Previously she was leading the department "Energy Technology" at the Fraunhofer ISE in Freiburg. Her main research is on fuel cells and on the production of hydrogen. Among numerous other memberships she is head of the Dechema division on electrochemical processes, member of the scientific committee "European Fuel Cell Forum" and of the "Senatsausschuss" of the DLR (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt).
