The fundamentals of energy harvesting have been widely explored but practical implementations and commercial adoption of the technology remain limited. It is clear that the design and performance of energy harvesters is closely linked to each application and these typically require bespoke solutions specifically targeting each particular application. This talk will describe the practical application of mechanical energy harvesting developed at the University of Southampton who have been working in this area for over 12 years. It will focus on example case studies and describe the practical constraints that arise in these scenarios. The harvesters and their associated systems developed for industrial, aeronautic and building applications will be described in detail. Vibration data from a wide range of other applications will also be presented.
